Private Space Vehicle

2012 was a milestone year for private spaceflight. The Space Shuttle retired from service, while the first successful commercial missions to the International Space Station launched. Government programs to shift mission operations over to private contractors began years before, but until 2012 they had yet to prove that they could successfully take over from government run programs. Whether they can successfully turn a profit remains to be seen, but either way the privatization of space has energized the industry.
